Events for Advent

Our LadyAdvent Evening at the Oratory
Monday, December 1, 7:00 pm
Join us for an evening of prayer and recollection on Advent. There will be an opportunity for Adoration and confession. We will begin with the traditional Oratory prayers in Church before moving to Fr. Felten Hall for a talk about Advent. We will conclude with Benediction at 9:00 pm.

Solemn Rorate Mass
Saturday, December 13, 6:45 a.m.
A German tradition celebrating a Votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin early in the morning, completely by candlelight. As daylight approaches and surpasses the shadows of the candles, we anticipate the entrance of Christ, the Light of the World, into our darkened earth at Christmas.

Advent Musical Oratory
Tuesday, December 16, 7:00 p.m.
Musical Oratory of Advent is an evening of choral reflection on Sacred Scripture concluding with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Choral pieces will be in English, German, and Latin by composers such as Bach, Praetorius, and Sermisy. A social and cookie exchange will follow.

Mrs. Emily Macke – Guest Speaker

When: Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Old St. Mary’s Church (gather in the Church at 7:00 p.m. for prayer, followed by Fr. Felten Hall at 7:30 p.m.)
Why: This month’s speaker will be Mrs. Emily Macke of Ruah Woods. Emily will address the Young Adult Oratory about Gender Identities. The Young Adult Oratory meets every 1st and 3rd Wednesday, with the 1st Wednesday being devoted to speakers and catechesis. The 3rd Wednesday is devoted to social time or volunteering in and around Old St. Mary’s Church in Over-the-Rhine.

The Young Adults Oratory is a fusion of the participation in the life of the Church (Adoration, Mass, Prayer with the Community) with a combination of lecture series, informal social gatherings, and community outreach. This will all be set in the traditional beauty of Old St. Mary’s, among the eclectic world of Over The Rhine, with the intellectual reverence bred by the forming Community-in-Formation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri.

O God our Father, You granted to Your servant Blessed John Henry Newman wonderful gifts of nature and of grace, that he should be a spiritual guide in the darkness of this world, an eloquent herald of the Gospel, and a devoted servant of the one Church of Christ. For his insight into the mysteries of the Kingdom, his zealous defence of the teachings of the Church, and his priestly love for all Your children, we pray that he may soon be numbered among the canonized saints. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Two Events in October

Musical Oratory of the Blessed Virgin Mary PosterJoin the Community-in-Formation for two big events next week. The first will occur on October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.  This Marian Musical Oratory will include the Evening Oratory prayers of the Community, combined with Sacred Music and Hymns about our Lady in German, English, and Latin. The evening will take the traditional form of prayer for the Oratory, as handed down by St. Philip Neri. A reflection upon the Mother of God will also be given.  Music will be provided by the Old St. Mary’s Choir and the Schola Cantorum Cincinnatensis. Please join us!

594px-John_Henry_Newman_by_Sir_John_Everett_Millais,_1st_BtThe second event is a Sung Mass for the Feast of Bl. John Henry Newman on October 9 at 7pm. This Mass will be in honor of one of the blesseds of the Oratory, and perhaps the most famous Oratorian in the world. Having had a keen interest in education and learning, he has become the patron of university Newman Centers around the country. Having brought the Oratory to the English Speaking world, we will celebrate this Feast, and also continue to ask God for his canonization as a saint. A blessing with a very rare relic of Bl. John Henry Newman will follow Mass. We hope to see you there!

Both events will take place at:
