Congratulations Bishop Cerrato…

Congratulations to Bishop Edoardo Aldo Cerrato, former Procurator General of the Congregation of the Oratory.  He was appointed Bishop of Ivrea, Italy several weeks ago by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI.  He was consecrated a Bishop on the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Cardinal Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State.  Bishop Cerrato was particularly helpful with the establishment of the Cincinnati Community-in-Formation, and always demonstrated his excitement about the possibilities of a Cincinnati Oratory.  Our prayers are with you Bishop Cerrato!  Ad Multos Annos!

Friend of the Community Passes Away

Glenmary Father James Patrick Kelly Dies

Father James Patrick Kelly, 95, a native of Sidney, Ohio, and a Glenmary Home Missioner for 62 years, died peacefully March 22 at Mercy Franciscan Terrace, a health care facility in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Father Kelly was the spiritual director for eleven years of the superior/moderator, one of the founders of the Community-in-Formation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Cincinnati, whose priestly ministry is at Old St. Mary’s Church at Over-the-Rhine of Cincinnati.

Being his spiritual director, Father Kelly approved, motivated, and encouraged the formation of the Community-in-Formation at Old St. Mary’s Church in 2008.  As a sign of his spiritual support, he donated to the newly formed Community hundreds of his books.

He died two days after the last visit of his spiritual directee, and he blessed Father Juarez so that he sees to it that Cincinnati Oratory be born, which was Fr. Kelly’s last wish and mission.  In spite of his failing health, he wanted to attend the conferral of habit of his spiritual directee, but died in afternoon of the day before the Conferral of Habit which took place last week.  Requiescat in Pace!

Order of Acolyte

On Saturday, March 24th, Br. Adrian was installed as an Acolyte of the Church by His Excellency the Most Rev. Joseph Binzer, Auxiliary Bishop of Cincinnati.  The Order of Acolyte is an ancient Order, going back to the earliest days of the Church.  There are several times in the Martyrology (Liturgical Book of Martyrs) that records the martyrdom of acolytes.  The Acolyte is considered a Minister of the Altar, and his primary duties include assisting the Deacon at the Altar, and purifying the Sacred Vessels in the absence of a Deacon.  During the Rite, the Bishop handed Br. Adrian a paten and chalice with this exhortation:  Take this vessel of bread for the celebration of the Eucharist. Make your lives worthy of your service at the table of the Lord and of his Church.  We congratulate Br. Adrian in taking this important step on his path to the priesthood!
