Today we will gather at the Donauschwaben Club for our annual parish picnic. This is always a good time for the parish to come together and see parishioners from the various Masses. This is one of the few opportunities we have for the whole parish to be together, so I encourage everyone to attend if possible. Thank you to everyone who helped plan and organize the parish picnic.
Today’s Gospel is the familiar recounting of the multiplication of the loaves and fish. This is one of the most beloved of the miracles of Christ. It is a foreshadowing of all the blessings that Christ was going to shower upon us, especially in the Eucharist. Unfortunately the Church that was built upon the place where this miracle happened was recently burned. Radical Israelis decided to catch this Church on fire, resulting in a lot of damage. Built in the midst of all of the great places we hear about in the Gospels, this was a spot of pilgrimage and prayer for Christians, as we recall all that God offers us. The Middle East is not a friendly place for Christians; whether it is hostility of certain Israelis for the faith or the brutality of radical Islam. Christians have been greatly displaced from the place where our Faith was born. May we pray for Christians in the Middle East, that they will be afforded the opportunity to live in peace. May we pray that the faith will once again take root in the place where Christ once walked and lived among us.
Also on a sad note, for those who may not have already known, St. Peter Claver Latin School for Boys closed its doors at the end of this past school year. Part of the vision of Fr. Lauer, the school was a beacon of hope for the boys that passed through these halls. Many of the boys will be transferring to St. Joe’s School in the West End. The board that operated St. Peter Claver hopes to be able to run an after school program to continue the mission in a different way. We pray for their success as we continue to work to grow strong faithful communities.
Right now there are no major plans for the school building. We will be working to turn it into a good Catechetical Center for the parish. The building will be cleaned up and ready for the Catechism Classes that start back up this fall. Please see the inside of the bulletin for more information on the program.
