This upcoming Thursday, we celebrate Thanksgiving. While this year has been very different and often challenging, there is still much that we ought to be thankful. We are each dependent beings, in that we rely on others for our existence. First and foremost, we rely upon God, in whom we live, move, and have our being. After God come our parents, from whom we received the gift of life and our upbringing. From there, we ought to have gratitude for those who assist us in any way, whether it is our government leaders, bosses, teachers, or anyone who does a kindness for us. Without God, and then ultimately each other, we would not be able to exist. While there is much in the world to down about, there is far more to be thankful. We live in the worst of times, we live in the best of times, but it is when we live in the end. No matter the time we live, our calling and purpose remain unchanged; that is to know, love, and serve God in this life to spend eternity with him in the life to come. So this Thanksgiving, try not to complain, to be bitter, to worry. While it is a secular holiday, gratitude is an important Christian virtue and necessary for us to practice. Have gratitude for all those people who have enabled you to be what you are, who have provided for you, and who continue to assist you in being. For one day, set everything aside and remind yourself of the importance of gratitude. St. Ambrose says: “No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks.”
Thank you to each of you for your support of the parishes and the Oratory. Without everyone’s’ prayers and generosity, it would be impossible to do our work. Thank you for all you do, and know that you remain in the Oratory’s daily prayers!
