Another month has come and gone, and we are about to enter into one of the busiest months of the year. October is always a hectic month. We start with several special Masses for St. Therese and Bl. John Henry Newman, our annual Musical Oratory of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the men’s Holy Name Eucharistic Procession, Forty Hour at Old St. Mary’s, and the Oratory Fundraising Banquet. I can’t think of a busier time of year, but indeed a time of year that affords us many opportunities for grace.
I encourage each of you to participate and assist during these special Masses and events. Of course, we are each very busy. I hear that often as a usual comment. But are we too busy for God? We are often willing to drive here or there for sports, or music, or concerts, or practice, whatever it might be. But sometimes Church becomes too far for us. So please be sure to check the calendar and attend what you can to help us give glory to God, to receive grace and merit, and to make the sacrifices that the Church needs to heal. The Faith is not just a Sunday affair, but it is an every moment affair. The Faith must inform our mind and our actions, as live this sometimes difficult life. We can’t box it up just into Sunday’s.
Please plan ahead. The first big thing in October is the Mass for St. Therese. Msgr. Frank Lane will be the celebrant, and blessed roses will be available following Mass. This is done since St. Therese is known as the Little Flower, and often portrayed with roses.
Our Musical Oratory of the Blessed Virgin Mary follows on Sunday, October 7, at 4:30 p.m. This is also the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This quasi-liturgical event is similar to our Musical Oratory of Advent, but with a specific focus on the Blessed Virgin Mary. October is the month of the Rosary, so we place this focus on the Blessed Virgin. Please be sure to pray the Rosary daily during October, and hopefully, form a good habit of praying it every day!
On October 9 we celebrate the Feast of Bl. John Henry Newman. Newman is the father of the Oratory in the English speaking world, having founded the first English speaking Oratory in Birmingham. He is well known for his writings and devotion to higher education, which is why Catholic centers on campuses are often called Newman Centers. Join the Oratory in prayer this day as we celebrate this important person in our spirituality and history.
On October 13 is the men’s Holy Name Eucharistic Procession. We begin at the Cathedral at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at Old St. Mary’s around 11:00 a.m. Please spread the word and invite as many men as you can, as we make this stand for Christ and His Church.
